Around 59 million Americans – 36% of the nation’s workforce– are currently involved in some type of independent work, according to a study by Upwork.   1. The opportunity to be their own boss
  2. The chance to have flexible work schedules
  3. The desire to choose their own projects and where they work from

But the numbers are not just growing in the U.S.; this is a global trend. In Europe, the EU estimates that the number of self-employed people working for digital platforms will grow from 28 million today to 43 million by 2025. In Mexico, there are over 13 million independent workers, which is around 23% of the workforce, according to the National Institute of Statistic and Geography.
