Dr. Gary Small is a professor of psychiatry and aging at UCLA, where he directs the Longevity Center, a past president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board. Dr. Small was among the team of investigators that discovered the major known genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease and is a co-inventor of the first positron emission tomography scan method that can provide images of the physical evidence of Alzheimer’s disease in living people. In addition to testing medicines and supplements that may benefit cognitive abilities and possibly delay the onset of decline, Dr. Small has studied and developed healthy lifestyle and memory education programs that are available throughout the U.S.

Dr. Small was a phi beta kappa, summa cum laude graduate of UCLA and earned his medical degree (alpha omega alpha) at the University of Southern California.  After an internal medicine internship at Children’s Hospital and Adult Medical Center in San Francisco, he completed a psychiatry residency at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital and a clinical fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Small then completed a geriatric psychiatry fellowship at UCLA.

Dr. Small has authored over 500 scientific works and has received numerous awards and honors, including the Senior Investigator Award, American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry; the Research Award in Geriatric Psychiatry from the American College of Psychiatrists; the International Psychogeriatric Association Research Award; and the Weinberg Award for Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association.  Scientific American magazine named him one of the world’s top 50 innovators in science and technology.  He is the author of 10 popular books on brain health and aging, including the New York Times bestseller The Memory Bible.
