Currently, more than two billion people worldwide do not have regular access to sufficient, nutritious food. According to the United Nations’ State of Food Insecurity 2021 Report, rates of hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition are rising.

The global pandemic has exacerbated the problem further, leaving many communities vulnerable to hunger. About 118 million more people were facing hunger in 2020 than in 2019, with estimates ranging from 70 to 161 million. Solutions to these mounting challenges are critical, including the need to promote access and behaviors for sustainable healthy diets, needs for education about healthy foods, and addressing how to adapt global food systems to meet these needs.

The Many Faces of Hunger: How Nutrition for Zero Hunger Partners Address the Triple Burden

Hunger is not a one-size-fits-all problem. Hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition are driven by complex factors which vary from community to community and country to country. To address these needs, we partner with organizations who support those most vulnerable to hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition.

Here’s how our Nutrition for Zero Hunger partners are supporting their communities for improved, sustainable access to healthy foods, supporting nutrition education programs, and carving a path to take hunger to zero.

Travis Arnold - Feed the Children

Feed the Children

Feed the Children is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting global hunger. Their work supports families and communities by providing food assistance and resources to help achieve stable lives both in the U.S. and internationally in 10 countries. In 2019, Feed the Children distributed 78 million pounds of food and essential items, and supported education initiatives which reached more than 1 million students by providing school supplies, books, and nutritious school meals. Their work supports 6.3 million people globally.

Jenna Recuber - The Hunger Project

The Hunger Project

The Hunger Project is a global, nonprofit organization committed to the sustainable end of world hunger. Their work is focused directly on local communities, building self-reliance at the grassroots level to empower women as key change agents and to forge effective partnerships with local governments. Across the globe, The Hunger Project’s education, agriculture, health, and microfinance programs impact people with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to break the cycle of poverty and achieve a sustainable end to hunger. Their work reaches more than 16,000,000 people in 24,000 rural communities worldwide.

Mark Loranger - Chrysalis

Chrysalis

Chrysalis is a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing resources and career development support to find and retain employment.  In Los Angeles, those experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable to hunger and food insecurity, even more so due to the effects of the pandemic. Chrysalis’ response through food donations and meal programs have helped mitigate the impacts of food insecurity on the community. Through our partnership, the organization provides nutrition and hydration products to program recipients.

Yanira Cruz - NHCOA

National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA)

The National Hispanic Council on Aging is a leading organization working to improve the lives of Hispanic older adults, their families, and their caregivers. Nutrition and a healthy, active lifestyle can greatly impact health, but education can often be a challenge for those who may not know how to get started or who are overwhelmed by conflicting information. In addition, traditionally underserved communities can have limited access to user-friendly information. Barriers including geography, language, age, and technology can impact one’s ability to adapt or change health and nutrition behaviors. This is particularly true for both the Latino community in the U.S. and for older adults. Through our partnership, NHCOA provides nutrition, health, and fitness education classes to their community as well as provide convenient sources of good nutrition through direct donations of Herbalife Nutrition product.

Jia Xin - Chinese Red Cross Foundation

Chinese Red Cross Foundation

The Chinese Red Cross Foundation is a leading public fundraising organization under the Chinese Red Cross Society, focusing on medical-aid, life and health protection, livelihood improvement, and promoting the peace and development of the world. Through our partnership, CRCF is able to provide nutrition and health education to rural doctors in poverty-stricken areas, often without any formal access to healthcare or sustainable nutrition. Through our Rural Doctors Online Training Program, high-quality learning opportunities increase access at the grass-roots level to help train rural medical workers and improve nutrition and overall public health for communities across China.
