Products and Support to Address the Rise in Obesity

I am proud to work for Herbalife, a premier global nutrition company. We make healthy nutrition and meal replacement products that help millions of people around the world with weight management and other health and wellness goals. Even though we’ve been at this work for 36 years and counting, there’s never been so much more to do. A new Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) report shows that prevalence of obesity among U.S. adult women has increased between 2005 and 2014.

Overall obesity prevalence in adult men is 35% and rate that did not change between 2005 and 2014. However in women, the obesity rate has increased to 40.4%. These recent numbers are based on data collected in 2013 and 2014 from a nationally representative sample of 2,638 adult men and 2,817 women.

Until recently, the rate of obesity between American men and women was increasing at about the same pace. But in recent years, women are slightly outpacing men in obesity and researchers are puzzled as to why. Other studies are needed to determine the reasons for these trends.

These obesity figures remain high in spite of the hundreds of millions of dollars that have been spent on research, trials, government, community and hospital programs, and the development of devices and drugs for the clinically obese. Experts agree that the emphasis should be shifted to keeping people from gaining weight in the first place, but the problem is that community-based prevention programs and education campaigns have fallen short.

According to a related editorial in JAMA from Jody W. Zylke, M.D., and Howard Buachner, M.D., the prevalence of obesity may be due in part to various societal factors including:

While the general principles of good nutrition apply to every person, there is no “one size fits all” diet.
