With all this in mind, it is important to consume protein daily to perform our best. But not everyone’s protein needs are the same.

While there are suggested daily amounts based on one’s weight, gender and lifestyle, each person has unique requirements – in part because protein needs also vary depending on the amount of lean body mass a person has. For example, a 200-pound fireman will have very different intake needs than an elderly woman.

Some people also have different tastes, preferences, and sensitivities to certain types of proteins. Generally speaking, soy is a great option, especially for people who choose a plant-based diet, but those with a soy allergy may choose quinoa or pea proteins. Whey is often preferred by athletes but, as a dairy protein, it may not be suitable for a person who is lactose intolerant or chooses to avoid animal products.

Furthermore, when you consume your protein is as important as ensuring you get the amount your body needs. It’s best to spread your protein intake somewhat evenly throughout the day rather than taking widely varying amounts at meals and snacks. Proper timing of protein intake is important for athletes who want to perform at their best.

When you consider all these factors, it’s fair to say your protein intake will differ from someone else, and it may be a challenge to give your body the right amount of protein at the right time every day.

Common Questions About Our Boosters

When is the best time to take protein boosters?

It’s important to ensure you’re spreading your protein intake throughout the day. This helps ensure that your body gets the steady supply of amino acids it needs to perform at its best.

EPP, in particular, is useful during the so-called “metabolic window” that occurs within an hour after strenuous exercise. After working out, your body is highly sensitive to protein availability, so providing the body with a source of protein during that time helps to minimize protein breakdown and stimulate muscle protein synthesis.

Can I heat or microwave the protein boosters?

In general, heat does not significantly affect the nutritional value of protein.

Proteins are made up of chains of amino acids, often called the “building blocks” of protein. There are many different amino acids that can be assembled into protein structures, and each protein has its own unique sequence of amino acids. Depending on the amino acid sequence, every protein also assumes its own natural shape. This protein shape can change and unfold in a process called “denaturation.”

Proteins can denature during cooking, but denaturation does not change the total amount of protein in the food.

How much protein should I take per day?

Protein boosters are convenient, but it’s good to know how much protein you actually need. One guideline from the Institute of Medicine recommends that we eat 10 to 35 percent of our total daily calories from protein; however, that rule is a general guideline.

Since everyone’s diets are different, let me offer two alternative methods to calculate your daily protein requirements:

1. Use Your Lean Body Mass

Lean body mass basically refers to everything in your body that isn’t fat. The suggested amount of protein you should eat every day depends, in part, on that. To find your lean body mass, you can get a body composition measurement done (some home bathroom scales can do this for you). Then, you can easily determine the amount of protein suggested for you.

The guidelines are to consume 0.5 to 1 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass. If using the metric system, that’s about 1 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of lean body mass.

2. Use Your Body Weight

If you don’t have access to body composition analysis, you can estimate your protein needs based on your current body weight. It’s not a perfect method because it doesn’t consider how much muscle mass you have, but it does at least account for differences in body size.

Here’s how to calculate your protein needs:

In pounds: multiply your body weight by 0.7

In kilograms: multiply your body weight by 1.5

The number you get is a reasonable target for the amount of protein, in grams, you should aim for each day. But remember, timing your intake is critical. Rather than focusing on consuming absolute amounts, focus on spreading your consumption throughout the day.

Susan Bowerman is the senior director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition. She also serves as a chairwoman of the Dietetic Advisory Board (DAB). As a registered dietitian, she educates distributors about our global nutrition philosophy and is responsible for developing nutrition education and training materials.

Bowerman earned a B.S. in Biology with distinction from the University of Colorado and an M.S. in Food Science and Nutrition from Colorado State University.
